PMGC Member Committees

  • Communications — Includes social media, website, and publicity. Shares posts to social media about PMGC and related gardening topics; responds to requests on social media; maintains the PMGC website; oversees membership emailing; prepares and sends out press releases for the scholarship, plant sale, and book selection committee.
  • Membership — This is a new committee that greets members and guests, welcomes new members at meetings, and provides name tags. Works with the treasurer and secretaries to keep membership info and dues up to date.
  • Plant Sale — Our annual spring plant sale is held the first Saturday in May and is our only fundraiser. The plant sale committee organizes and manages the sale. The committee teaches members how to select, prepare, and price plant material. The committee manages the logistics of the sale, including set up and organization of sale day.
  • Public Gardens — PMGC members maintain Town Run Garden beds (beside White Hall on the Shepherd University Campus) and Market House planters (on German Street, in front of Shepherdstown Welcome Center). Committee members do seasonal weeding, planting, mulching, and plant selection. Members can work individually or on organized work days.
  • Refreshments — This committee recruits members to provide simple refreshments with minimal waste for our meetings.
  • School Book Selection — Each year, a selected school in Jefferson County is invited to select a collection of garden-related books to add to the school library. The committee works with the librarian to make the selections, purchase books, and present the books.
  • Student Scholarship — PMGC awards a $1,500 scholarship each spring to a graduating senior from Jefferson County who is pursuing a degree in an environmental concern. The committee reviews and refines the application, works with Jefferson County high schools to provide the digital scholarship, promotes the scholarship, evaluates applications, and selects candidate(s).

The sale features perennials, herbs, natives, and deer-resistant plants and shrubs. We offer gardening advice and plant identification.
